Resources for those affected by Hurricane Gustav

Note: Check this site often, as it is constantly evolving. If you know of a helpful website, agency, or other resource that is not listed, please email us about it.

After a disaster like Gustav, there are many needs to be met and things which must be done. This site is devoted to providing a clear, concise list of reliable resources to help you accomplish this as quickly and easily as possible. It is intended mainly for helping with your medium to long-term concerns, after your immediate safety and survival issues have been addressed, and you’re now facing the question “What next?”

Use the menu bar to find what you’re looking for, and let us know about anything we missed, or any great resources you’ve used successfully. The more we share, the more we all help one another get through this. We drew what we felt was the best from many sources of information, including our own experiences in Katrina, to produce this site, and hope you find it useful.

Quick List of Things To Do After the Storm

  • Contact friends and family to let them know where you are. Exchange cell numbers, email addresses, etc. especially any new or temporary ones, such as those at the location you are staying.
  • Get in touch with your insurance company as soon as possible.
  • If you will be out of your home and/or work for a long time, contact your mortgage company, credit card companies,  car finance company, and any other creditors. Explain what has happened, and ask for your payments to be deferred. Free advice is available.
  • Apply for all available financial and material assistance.
  • If necessary, start looking for a new home NOW! After Katrina, houses were in short supply, and many buyers were taken advantage of. Act quickly, and have a good buyer agent represent you. It doesn’t cost you anything, and you will be protected.
  • Above all, keep the faith! If you are reading this, you are alive, and survived the storm. No matter how bad the losses seem, it DOES get better. Be thankful for your well-being, and remember that there are lots of people ready and willing to help you.
